As most of you are probably aware we are currently experiencing an outbreak of K9 influenza (H3N2) in Florida.  Like the human flu, the K9 flu is spread through nasal secretions – direct contact, shared spaces, surfaces, toys, and it is proving to be very contagious.

Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, weight loss, dehydration, vomiting, and lack of appetite. Symptoms may last anywhere from 7 days to 3 weeks – it is very important to isolate affected dogs for 4 weeks from the first sign of illness. Puppies and older or immunocompromised dogs are especially at risk of developing more life-threatening complications such as pneumonia.

There IS a vaccine available – it is given as an initial shot, followed by a booster shot 2-4 weeks after the initial. Vaccination does not completely protect your dog from contracting the virus, but it does lessen their chance of getting the flu and if they do contract the virus they will have a much lower risk of potentially life threatening complications. There are facilities (groomers, daycare and boarding) already requiring the vaccine, if you take your pet to any of these places please check with them to see what their policies are. Contact us to discuss if your dog is a candidate for the vaccine.
